Three Edge Bearing Calculations

Pipe Geometry

Pipe Shape

Select between CIRCULAR, VELLIPT (Vertical ELLIPTcal), HELLIPT (Horizontal ELLIPTcal), or ARCH.

Inner Diameter or Span

The inner diameter of a circular pipe or the span of an elliptical pipe.

Arch Pipe Invert Radius

The radius of the bottom of an arch pipe (if any).

Arch Pipe Crown Radius

The radius of the crown of an arched pipe (if any).

Wall Thickness

Thickness of the pipe wall.

Inside Reinforcing Cover

Distance between the edge of the nearest layer of reinforcement and the inside face of the pipe wall.

Outside Reinforcing Cover

Distance between the edge of the nearest layer of reinforcement and the outer face of the pipe wall.

Material Properties

Reinforcing Type

Type of reinforcement:

      1 = Smooth wires

2 = Welded smooth wire fabric

3 = Welded deformed wire fabric, deformed bars, or any reinforcement with stirrups

Reinforcing Yield Stress

Yield stress of the circumferential reinforcement.

Reinforcing Ultimate Stress

Ultimate stress of the circumferential reinforcement.

Design Criteria

Ultimate or Yield.

Concrete Strength

Compressive strength of the concrete.

Circumferential Reinforcing Spacing

Spacing of the circumferential reinforcement (along the length of the pipe).

Design Coefficients

Flexural strength reduction factor

Phi factor for the flexural strength of the pipe.

0.01 inch crack strength reduction factor

Phi reduction factor for 0.001 inch crack strength.

Diagonal tension strength reduction factor (PhiD)

Phi factor for the diagonal tension strength of the concrete.

Radial tension strength reduction factor (PhiR)

Phi factor for the radial tension strength of the pipe.

Cs (Aso/Asi)

Design coefficient used to compute required outer reinforcement.

Cx (for inside reinforcement)

Design coefficient used to compute required inner reinforcement.

Stirrup Criteria

Developable Stirrup Strength

Developed stirrup strength.

Maximum Stirrup Spacing

Maximum stirrup spacing.

Determine D-Load capacity for specified inside reinforcing

Select the live load deflection criteria. Live load deflections of single cell culverts are compared with.

Inner reinforcing area

Input inner reinforcement area, used to determine the DL capacity.

Determine required reinforcing for specified D-loads

Select Check Slenderness and input a K Factor to have the analysis perform a slenderness check.

0.01 inch D-load

Entered 0.01 inch dead load, used to compute required reinforcement.

Ultimate D-load

Entered ultimate dead load, used to compute required reinforcement.
