Units Of Measurement

Eriksson Girder provides support for both major systems of units of measurement that are recognized by

AASHTO. These are as follows:

  • SI Units

  • Customary U.S. Units

Within Eriksson Girder, SI units are referred to as “metric” units. Care has been taken to conform to the same units specified in the metric version of the LRFD Specifications. However, since Eriksson Girder supports both sets of AASHTO Specifications (LRFD and Standard) and both sets of units, it is not always practical to strictly adhere to the SI units’ types. For example, in certain cases it might be more practical to report units in MPa instead of KPa. However, in any case, when a minor adjustment to the units type is made, no loss of accuracy should be experienced.

Eriksson Girder uses Customary U.S. units internally for all internal calculations and for all data storage.
When “metric” units are chosen, a conversion is made at the user interface. That is, all values
displayed by the program will be metric units, but the internal units will remain Customary U.S.
This permits the user to switch between systems of units rapidly without loss of accuracy. Further,
you can cycle back and forth between systems of units without accumulation of round-off errors.
Table 1 below lists the conversion factors used by Eriksson Girder.
