Starting a Design

As mentioned earlier, to start Eriksson Pipe, run Eriksson Pipe.exe.  However, the easiest way to start Eriksson Pipe is to launch it through the Programs folder of the Start menu, which should be located in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.

When Eriksson Pipe is first started, two basic options are available.  Either a new design can be started or a previous job can be re-opened.

To start a new design, select New from the File menu or click the New button on the toolbar as shown below.

You are taken immediately to the Job Information screen.

To open a previous design file, select Open from the File menu or click the Open button on the toolbar.

Eriksson Pipe will open a dialog box and display a list of files ending in “.PIP” in the current folder.  Double-clicking on a job file will load the file into Eriksson Pipe.

Only the New, Open and Help buttons on the toolbar are enabled until a new job has been started or a previous job restored.  Only one job is permitted to be open at a time in Eriksson Pipe.  Accordingly, when a new job is opened, the current job is automatically closed.  If any changes have been made to the current job, the user will be presented with the option of saving the current job first.

Required Input

The input for Eriksson Pipe (direct design) is organized into logical groups of data.  Each group is entered via one or more dialog boxes of information.  The main groups are as follows:

  1. Job Information – Text description of the job

  2. Project Settings – Governing specification and operation mode

  3. Pipe Properties – Culvert dimensions and material properties

  4. Design Code and Install Conditions – Applied dead and live loads

  5. Live Loads – Override load & resistance factors as necessary

  6. Reinforcement - Specify run-time changes to basic assumptions and equations

When a new job is started, the input boxes in the above dialog boxes will each be initialized to the default parameters set by the user, with the exception of the pipe dimensions.

Program Computations

Eriksson Pipe automatically updates its calculations whenever an open dialog box is closed using the OK button for that dialog box.  Calculations are also recomputed when a previous job is restored.  Because of its extremely fast 32-bit calculation engine, Eriksson Pipe’s recalculation times are typically less than a few seconds.
