When using the method in ACI318, the user must specify the surface condition of their member. Once the condition is specified the program will compute Av/s requried or check ɸVnh, whichever is applicable. The calculations Eriksson Beam does is summarized below:

Surface Condition

ACI Definition

Av/s Requirement

Check Performed

Roughened

Intentionally roughened w/ Reinforcement

Concrete placed against hardened concrete intentionally roughened to a full amplitude of approximately 1/4 in.

If Vuh ≤ ɸ500bd

Av/s computed per ACI 318-14 table 16.4.4.2

If Vuh > ɸ500bd

Av/s is computed in accordance with ACI 318-14 22.9

None

Roughened

Intentionally roughened w/o Reinforcement

Concrete placed against hardened concrete intentionally roughened

None

Vuh ≤ ɸ80bd

Smooth

Not intentionally roughened w/

Reinforcement

reinforcement

Concrete placed against hardened concrete not intentionally roughened

Av Minimum

Vuh ≤ ɸ80bd

In the above equation b is the contact width and d is the depth to the flexure reinforcement. This does not represent an area, like in the one-way shear equations, but are two individual terms.

PCI Design Handbook 8th Edition, Section 5.3.5

When the user selects the PCI Design Handbook, Eriksson Beam both Vuh and ɸVnh.

Vuh is computed by determining the force in topping that needs to be transferred to the precast section. This force is equal to the area of the topping in compression multiplied by 0.85 times the compression strength of the topping. The area in compression is determined by using the average maximum neutral axis depth on the section.
